(WCIV) — South Carolina doctors, nurses and abortion-rights advocates warned Friday that a bill advancing in the Republican-led Legislature could deepen the state’s maternal health care shortages and further restrict abortion access.</p><p>The event was held on Friday morning at the Charleston County Democratic Party headquarters and hosted by Americans for Contraception. <p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>Women deserve equality in every part of life — at work, at home, and in healthcare.</strong></span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Women are the backbone of our workforce, but too many are forced out because of skyrocketing childcare costs, absence of childcare availability, unfair pay, and lack of good employment opportunities. </span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">South Carolina is letting its women down by blocking reproductive freedom and personal agency. Women deserve to make their own healthcare decisions without interference from politicians and religious doctrine. </span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">South Carolina is also letting its mothers down. Our state has an atrocious maternal mortality rate - 8th highest in the nation - with women of color facing twice the risk of white women. Maternal mental healthcare is severely lacking as well.</span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">We can do so much better for the 2.8 million women in our state.</span></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>When women succeed, families succeed.
